  • Volleyball
    A team sport played by two teams with six players separated by a net. Each side tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules.
  • Volleyball play
    1. Player on one team begins a 'rally' by serving the ball over the net
    2. Receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court
    3. Team may touch the ball up to 3 times, but individual players may not touch the ball twice consecutively
    4. First two touches are used to set up for an attack
    5. Rally continues until a team makes a kill or commits a fault

  • Mintonette
    A pastime to be played preferably indoors and by any number of players, taking some characteristics from tennis and handball
  • First exhibition match of the game, now known as volleyball, played at the Springfield YMCA

    Originally spelled as two words: "volley ball"
  • Underhand service

    • Left foot slightly forward (Right foot for a left-handed server) and pointing towards the net
    • Extend the tossing hand in front of the body
    • The hitting arm should be ready to hit
    • Contact the ball with hitting arm
    • Make a follow through by seeing your arm extended forward after the contact
  • Overhead float serve

    • Footwork is similar to the underhand serve
    • The tossing arm held out in front of the body
    • The hitting arm is held above the right shoulder with the elbow and shoulder
    • The one-two- (toss-hit) rhythm is used
    • Toss the ball above the head and in front of the shoulder after shifting the weight forward to the front foot
    • Contact the ball with open hand made into a "wooden board"- rigid, finger held tightly together
    • Make a follow through by seeing your hand and arm extended forward
  • Passing
    • Hold the back of one hand with the other hand, and place the thumbs side by side
    • Wrap one hand around the other (hold in fist) and place the thumbs side by side
    • Put the left hand between the right index (hold in fist) and place the thumb side by side
    • Form a good platform by keeping the forearms locked together working as one
    • The legs are bent with knees in front of the toes
    • The feet should always form a stable base
    • The ball is contacted two or four inches above the wrists
    • The arms and wrist should be as flat as possible
  • Spike
    • Feet, shoulder width apart. Knees are bent. The body is bent forward at the waist. The head is held up
    • The approach can be four, three or two steps
    • The last two steps of the approach are the beginning of the jump as the knees are flexed. The arms swing backward, forward then up as the vertical jump begin
    • The spiking arm is moved back and up into hitting position. The hitting arm swings upward and forward to contact the ball which is usually 2 to 3 feet in front of the hitting shoulder with a wrist snaps
  • Block
    • Before jumping, the blocker should position in front of the spiker's favorite angle of attack, always jump to where spiker has made his last jump
    • Jump at least a meter from the net. The hands should penetrate over the net. The rule is: " Eyes up, head down. " Keep the eyes open all the time
    • Attempt to contact the ball with the open hands. The hands should be facing the opponent's floor downwards
    • Once contact has been made, or the ball has passed the block to prevent touching the net. The blocker lands turn back quickly to assist in defense or backpedal for a transition play
