• 28 states joined the Kleindeutsch union proposed by Frederick William IV and General Radowitz in 1850
• Austria was furious at being excluded from the Kleindeutsch union


  Recalled the Bundestag
• Hanover and Saxony deserted the Erfurt Union
• Germany was divided between two competing unions
• Prussia and Austria sent troops to crush a revolt in Hesse-Cassel but ended up fighting each other
• Frederick William IV fired Radowitz to avoid a larger conflict with Austria
• Manteuffel, Frederick William IV's new minister, humiliatingly dissolved the Erfurt Union at the Capitulation of Olmutz
• The German Confederation was formerly re-established with all 39 members in 1851
