  • Cut
    The most basic and abrupt transition where one shot instantly changes to the next
  • Dissolve
    One shot gradually fades out while the next shot fades in over it, blending the two for a smooth transition
  • Fade In/Fade Out

    The shot fades from or to a solid color, usually black
  • Wipe
    A line or shape moves across the screen, revealing the next shot as it passes
  • Iris In/Out

    The shot appears to open up like an iris, or closes like one
  • Clock Wipe
    The wipe transition happens in a circular/clock motion
  • Barn Door Wipe
    The wipe resembles opening or closing barn doors
  • Venetian Blinds

    The transition looks like opening/closing Venetian blinds
  • Cross Dissolve

    Like a dissolve but the outgoing and incoming shots are briefly superimposed
  • Dip to Black/White

    The shot momentarily transitions to solid black or white before the next shot
  • Split Screen

    Two shots appear side-by-side on the screen
  • Spin
    The outgoing shot appears to spin away to reveal the incoming shot
  • Zoom

    The shot zooms out/in to transition to the next
  • Push
    The outgoing shot appears to get pushed off the screen by the incoming one
  • Slide
    One shot slides off to reveal the next sliding in from an opposite direction
  • Stretch
    The outgoing shot is stretched and squished before transitioning
  • Squeeze
    Similar to stretch but the shots look squeezed/compressed during transition
  • Morphing
    One shot appears to seamlessly transform into the next through digital effects
  • Swish Pan
    A very whip-panned transitional camera move between two shots
  • Whip Pan
    A extremely fast camera pan used to transition between shots
  • Jump Cut

    An abrupt transition that seems to jump across missing footage
  • L Cut

    Transitions audio before video or vice-versa for a smoother transition
  • J Cut

    Like an L cut but transitions the audio after, instead of before, the video cut
  • Smash Cut

    A jarring, abrupt cut from one shot to a vastly different one
  • Match Cut
    Cuts between two shots with closely matched motion/framing
