A Psychology term and a German word (pronounced "ge-shtalt") which means CONFIGURATION, STRUCTURE, or UNIFIED WHOLE
The idea of how human make sense of things as a WHOLE, rather than an individual parts is called GESTALT PSYCHOLOGY
Face
When we look at a face, we will not focus only on one feature. A face make sense because of the combine features.
Psychology plays a powerful role in Visual Perception which designers must need to consider
Good designer
Make things appealing to the eye
Great designer
Understand how the brain works
Gestalt was started in Berlin, Germany in 1920' and was applied in Visual Perception
Gestalt
Defined as the sum of the whole is greater than its parts
Gestalt Psychologists
MAX WERTHEIMER
WOLFGANG KÖHLER
KURT KOFFKA
Gestalt Psychologists discovered that out brain likes to understand things in simplified ways
A main idea of Gestalt Perception is all about GROUPS or WHOLE
General rules of Gestalt theory
Objects will be perceived in their simplest form
Humans naturally follow lines or curves
The mind will attempt to fill in details that isn't actually there
Gestalt Principles/ Laws of Perception
CONTINUITY
SIMILARITY
CLOSURE
PROXIMITY
SYMMETRY
FIGURE & GROUND
Continuity
It occurs when the eye is compelled to move through one object and continue to another object. This is used in typography based logos.
Similarity
It occurs when object look similar to one another. The viewer will perceive them as a group or pattern. These can be similarities in color, shape, texture, orientation, or font and any other design element.
Closure
It occurs when an element is incomplete or a space is not totally enclosed. When there is an incomplete or fragmented image, human brain tend to fill in the missing parts to perceive a complete whole.
Proximity
It occurs when objects that are close to each other are perceived as belonging together. The position of these elements help to portray a relationship between the separate parts.
Symmetry and Order
It occurs when elements that are symmetrical to each other tend to be perceived as a unified group. Several symmetries can occur in one design.
Figure and Ground
This principle describe how our perception tends to separate the elements of a scene into a Figure, which is the object of focus and a Ground, which is the background against which the figure stands.
Gestalt principles help designers make recognizable brands, solve design problems in creative ways, and understand what makes a design good
Learning about Gestalt principles helps designers make great-looking and effective designs for different things like websites, logos, and any graphic design works
