  state shouldn't provide education but the government should encourage competition and privatised education to drive up standards and we should have a free marketplace
• Chubb and Moe (New Right)

  Schools need to be in competition with each other to raise standards - pupils from low income families consistently do 5% better in private than state schools
• Chubb and Moe's solution to education

  Market system where every family is given a voucher to spend on education from a school and this would be the school's main income forcing schools to improve standards to gain pupils
• New Right's two roles of the state

  1- imposes a framework in which schools compete, e.g. ofsted

  2- ensure that schools transmit a shared culture, e.g. national curriculum
• Evaluation of New Right perspective

  -cause of low educational standards is inequality and poor funding, not state control

  -contradiction between support for parental choice and National Curriculum implemented
