  • 1901
    • Platt Amendment - part of the 1901 Army Appropriations bill - stipulations on US withdrawal from Cuba.
    • US only withdraw if given a say in investment policy and military bases e.g. Guantanamo Bay - US expansionist motives.
    • Cuba’s right to  negotiate treaties was limited.
    • US intervention in Cuba for preservation of Cuban Independence was permitted. Cubans felt this was an infringement of their Sovereignty. 
  • 1902
    • Roosevelt Corollary - created as a development of Monroe Doctrine. US justified intervening in countries first to stop involvement from others.
  • 1903
    • Big Stick Diplomacy - US sent ship to support Panamanians in revolt against Columbians. meant the US gained 10 miles of Panama Canal instead of 6 for $10 million and $250,000 every year.
  • 1905
    • Victory of Japan in the Russo Japanese war - concerned the US that the balance of power was shifting in the Far East in Japan's favour.
  • 1907
    • Great White fleet tour - showcased US naval power - was well received. intimidation to show US military power.
  • 1909
    • Taft places emphasis on Dollar Diplomacy encouraging US businesses and banks to invest in Latin America
