  • Tawhid
    Oneness. The idea of Allah as one God. Muslims believe Allah is the only God
  • Shahadah
    The declaration of faith. Muslims declare there is no God except Allah. It is whispered into a baby's ear and at their death
  • Shirk
    Anything that is disrespectful to Allah. It is trying to make things equal to Allah when they can't be because he is so great. An example is drawing Allah as a human. Muslims find this disrespectful
  • Qur'an
    The Islamic Holy book, Muslims believe it is the word of Allah. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is treated with respect
  • Salat
    Prayer. It is communication and worship of Allah. Muslims pray 5 times a day
  • Sawm
    Fasting from dawn until sunset during the month of Ramadan. It also involves giving up things like smoking, gossiping and having sex
  • Zakat
    1 of the 5 pillars. It is giving to charity. Muslims have a duty to give 2.5% of their excess wealth to charity
  • Du'ah
    Varying forms of personal prayer. They are the one-to-one connections a Muslim has with Allah
  • Adhan
    The call to prayer. A muezzin will stand on the top of the tower of the mosque and call people to prayer
  • Halal
    An action or thing that is acceptable under Islamic Law. Meats that have been slaughtered in a certain way are halal
  • Hadith
    Sayings of Muhammad that give guidance to Muslims. They are source of authority
  • Muslims believe in one God called Allah
  • Allah revealed his truths to special people called prophets
  • The last and greatest prophet is the Prophet Muhammad
  • The messages from Allah were collected in the Qur'an (their holy book)

  • The 6 central beliefs or articles of faith in Islam
    • That Allah is the only God
    • That Allah created angels. These angels interact with humans. Each Muslim has 2 guardian angels who will write down all they have done in life. This will be judged in the afterlife
    • Allah gives his message in holy books such as the Qur'an
    • Allah has spoken through prophets such as Muhammad, Moses and Abraham
    • There will be a Day of Judgement when if your good deeds outweigh the bad you will go to Paradise
    • Allah has a plan for everyone and this plan is written down by Allah and shows what has happened and what will happen. This does not remove people's Free Will
  • Allah
    Muslims believe that there is only one God named Allah
  • Shahadah
    The statement of faith in Allah. It is the first pillar of Islam. It is the declaration of faith in Allah as the only God and that the Prophet Muhammad was his messenger. It is the first thing a Muslim baby hears when it is born as it is whispered into its ear and it is the last thing they will hear as it is said as a Muslim is dying
  • Allah has 99 other names which represent characteristics of Allah including patience, the truth and the giver of life. Allah is the greatest name. When a Muslim prays they may use a necklace with 99 beads on it to represent these names
  • Muslims do not draw Allah as a human but only as a symbol. They believe that if you draw Allah as a human it limits his powers and is disrespectful. This is called shirk
  • Characteristics of Allah
    • His omnipotence - he is all-powerful or omnipotent
    • His immanence - he is close to the world
    • His benevolence - he is all-loving
    • His mercy - he is forgiving
    • He is a creator of all of the world
    • He is a judge who will decide our afterlife
  • Greater Jihad
    The struggle to be a good Muslim. It is the struggle to live according to all of the rules and to be a good Muslim. It will include: Controlling your desires, Avoiding being lazy, Encourage what is right and make the world a better place, Respect the beliefs of others
  • Qur'an
    Allah's revelation - Message from God. It was revealed by Allah through the Angel Jibril to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years
  • The Qur'an teaches Muslims how to worship, how to treat others including your parents, about how to avoid gossip and a reminder how to help the poor
  • Some Muslims learn the Qur'an word-for-word. If you can recite the whole of the Qur'an you are called a Hafiz
  • The Qur'an contains stories that we read in the Bible including Adam and Eve, Noah and the Ark and the story of a young girl Maryam who gave birth to an important prophet called Isa (Jesus)
  • The Qur'an teaches Muslims about the power of Allah, how to worship him and how we will be judged on Judgement Day
  • Sunnah
    A record of all that the Prophet Muhammad said and did so it is a guide to how Muslims can behave like him
  • Hadith
    Contains the Prophet Muhammad's sayings as recoded by his family and companions
  • As the Prophet Muhammad was an outstanding character his sayings in the Hadith are important
  • The Hadith gives an account of the Prophet Muhammad's last sermon
  • How Muslims should treat the Qur'an
    • It is wrapped in cloth and placed on a high shelf to protect it when it is not being used
    • Muslims wash thoroughly before touching it
    • When reading it they will place it on a stand rather than an everyday table
    • When it is being read Muslims must not eat and drink over it, speak or make any unnecessary noise
    • Women are not allowed to read it if they are on their period
    • Muslims show respect for the Qur'an by following the rules in it
  • The Five pillars of Islam

    • Declaring their faith in Allah and the Prophet Muhammad
    • Praying 5 times a day
    • Giving 2.5% of their money to charity
    • Fasting during Ramadan
    • Going on pilgrimage to Mecca
