• Reporter takes the chance to turn up to Gatsby's house to ask if there was "Anything to say" represents how outside of the parties no one knows Gatsby's true persona and background.
• V IMPORTANT "His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people - his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all" He always had ambitions of becoming elite.
• "He was a son of God" a Deity that represents hedonistic lifestyle and social climbing. An exemplar persona of reinventing yourself but being held back by society.
• 'He knew women early" - Separates Daisy as a special girl, someone who didn't apply to the masses.
• "The most grotesque and fantastic conceits haunted him" - Fear of not attaining Daisy's love, fear of not fulfilling American Dream. These nightmares overpower him. The "fantastic ashen figure" kills him, and the "grotesque thing a rose is" possibly hinting at the horror that is real true love to Gatsby, torments him on his death bed.
• "Unreality of reality" paradoxical - Presents him as delusional. He dreams to meet Daisy but the cahse is what keeps him going.
• Gatsby foolishly thinks he is able to come to dinner with the Sloane's. Represents his true lower class self shining through and his desire to be accepted by the upper class.
• Nick details the very unpredictable nature of love 'Perhaps, a n unbelivable guest would arrive, a person infinetly rare.. blot out those five years of unwavering devotion" True love is not real in West Egg, this "unprecidented place" as Daisy describes.
• "Can't repeat the past? he cried incredulously. "Why of course you can!" - pivotal quote of the novel. Revolves around the whole prospect of the chase for Daisy.
• "I'm going to fix everything just the way it was before" "She'll see"
• "He could climb it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder" - Gatsby could achieve elitism given Daisy is not part of the equation. Her role in his life limits his impression, his actions, his friendships and therefore his whole life. She is the limiting factor in this tragic tale of social climbing.
• "Forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable death, his mind would never romp (play enthusiastically) again like the mind of God" - He would be physically and mentally altered by this encounter. The kiss would seal off his ambition and he would transform into a satisfied version of himself.
• "The incarnation was complete" Gatsby's goal of morphing into a deity representative of the American Dream and hedonistic lifestyle would be complete if he could repeat the past.
