He wishes for the clothes of Heaven

Cards (7)

    • The poet skilfully use imagery to tell us his story.
    • Image of a paradise like location “Had I the heavens embroided cloths enwrought with golden and silver light“ struck with me as it was powerful. This image metaphorically describes the author picturing having the finest things in life (list). Furthermore the poet is aware that it’s only his wishes as he is poor. The poet stated “But I being poor, only have my dreams.” this image describes Yeats desire to have all the world‘s wealth to provide for his beloved.
  • Unfortunately he is poor and cannot treat her as he would like. In addition he asked her to “tread softly” because he knew that she won’t accept his pursuit for love.
  • Image of “ The blue and the dim and the dark cloths” is excellent because it represents a journey of divergent emotional states. The poet began with a sense of wishfullness and joy and then felt downcasted. This image made me resonate the change of the sky colours share the day as well, this can also be compared to the changes in emotional states.

  • Personal Story - what does it reveal to you
    • The poem revealed to me how people feel the intensity of the emotion love. The speakers prepared to give up his aspirations to make his lover happy, This illustrates the selflessness present in human relationships. The poem contrast desires and the present this also applies to relationships, for example a couple may want to buy a house but they may not have the finances to do so. Overall the poem suggests that people are more vulnerable than you think in the pursuit of love.
