    • John Howard (Christian) inspected prisons late C18.
    • Gave evidence to Parliament prisons were diseased, dirty and corrupt.
    • Asked for basic but essential provisions (e.g. clean running water, separate cells for men and women, access to doctors, more prison officers) 
    • Elizabeth Fry (Quaker Christian - C19) visited Newgate Prison - London (1813), then devoted her life to improving UK prison conditions as it was important for prison reformers
    • Felt educating prison reformers was vital.
    • Famous for teaching female prisoners to read and write, and holding Bible readings for them.
