To daffodils

Cards (6)

  • Robert Herrick
  • The theme of this poem is nature and transience. The topic of nature is expressed to the reference of the beauty of daffodils “fair daffodils” as well as the reference of the Sun “as her the early rising sun”.
Daffodils and the Sun are 2 important parts of nature. Daffodils are vibrant and attractive but they are ephemeral as they’ll soon wither away. Furthermore through the reference to nature,Robert emphasis the transience of nature by metaphori comparing it to the life of a person and the finest things in life, which would inevitable come to an end, much like plants.
  • People also refers to humans as “We die“.
“We have a short time to stay, as you.”
  • “you haste away so soon”
  • Effective image - as yet the early rising sun.. stay stay“.
    • Reminded me - the sun rising -visually appealing.
    • this effervescent image made me recall how the Sun is a magnificent aspect of nature.Unfortuantely its attributes won’t last forever.
    • I can contrast the sunrise with the theme of transience ; the sun rises but it will eventually end and daffodils will die.
    • effected my thoughts and feelings as it made me realise how things are fleeting in life and we should enjoy things whilst they last
  • we have a short time to stay - evokes an image of an hourglass because it highlights the finite nature of time, much like the sand and running out in an hour glass. This image emphasises the statement that everything in life is temporary/carpe diem which means seize the day/make the most out of time.
