Ionic Compounds

Cards (11)

    • Ionic bonds are formed between metal and non-metal
    • Electrons are transferred
    • Metals lose electrons, non-metals are taking them
    • Cation: when an atom reacts with an atom of another element, it donates its outermost electron(s) to leave a full and stable electron shell (typically metals)
    • Ion: an atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons
    • Anion: accepts electrons to achieve full electron shell
    • An ionic compound is made up of a cation and an anion
    • The element’s charge is determined by its subscript - based on its group number or known amount of valence electrons
    • Atoms bond to achieve a full valence shell
    • Polyatomic ion: A group of atoms (non metals) that form a bonded unit with an overall charge
    • Multivalent metals have more than one possible charge and the top one is the most common
