Protecting the Eye

• Eyes are located in the bony orbit of the skull - which can deflect many blows. In addition, the eye is cushioned by fat.
• A second line of defense is provided by the eyelids - The eyelids can be opened and closed either voluntarily or involuntarily.
• Tears - The fluid is composed primarily of water and salt but also contains proteins, glucose, and substances that kill bacteria.
