Localisation of function in the brain

Cards (2)

  • One strength of localisation of function in the brain is that damage to areas of the brain is linked to mental disorders. Neurosurgery last option for treatment. E.g. cingulotomy involves isolating the cingulate gyrus which is linked to ocd. Researcher reported on ppl with ocd who had surgery. In post-surgical follow up, found 30% has successful responses, 14% partial.
  • One strength of localisation of function in the brain is that there is evidence from brain scans. Researcher used brain scans to show Wernicke's area active in listening task and Broca's area active in reading task. Also, researcher reviewed LTM and found that semantic and episodic memories reside in different parts of the pre-frontal cortes. Studies confirm localised areas for everyday behaviours. Suggests that objective methods for measuring brain activity shows scientific evidence that brain functions are localised.
