Preparing Common Salts

• Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the most common salt, also known as table salt.
• Some salts have wide range of uses
• Calcium Chloride is used to absorb moisture
• Calcium Chloride is known as a drying agent
• Calcium Chloride is used in food processing, seasoning, medicine
• Calcium Chloride is used for speeding up setting of concreate
• Zinc Sulfate is used to make cosmetics, textile material
• Zinc Sulfate is used to make rayon, glue, and bleeching
• Zinc Sulfate is known to be a herbicide and in treatment of sewage
• Acid + Metal = Salt + Hydrogen
• Acid + Carbonate = Salt + Water Carbon dioxide
• Acids used to make salts are HCL, H2SO4, and NHO3
• HCl + NaOH -> NaCl + H20
• Metals used to make salts are Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Zn, Cu, Ag, Pb, Sn, Cd, Bi, As, Sb, Se, Te
• When we heat a concentrated solution the solvent starts to evaporate
• Evaporation causes the solution to become more and more concentrated
• Filtration is carried by folding a peice of filter paper to make a cone
• After making a cone insert it into a filter funnel
• The filter funnel is supported above a collecting vessel and a mixture
• We can prepare a common salt by adding Zinc to HCL
• When we add Zinc to HCL bubbles of gas rise from the metal
• Liquid is poured on a filter paper and the remains are Zinc Metal
• We can prepare a salt from an acid and carbonate by adding calcium carbonate to HCL
• We add chips and the chips produce bubbles of gas
• When the bubbles the stop some chips are left
• The remaining chips are pored on a filter paper and the chips are seperated
