  • Disney's 12 basic principles of animation = Disney animators OLLIE JOHNSTON & FRANK THOMAS = 1981, The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation
  • SQUASH & STRETCH - illusion of gravity, weight, mass, flexibility
  • SQUASH & BSTRETCH - keeping object's volume consistent is important
  • SQUASH - wider
  • STRETCH - thinner
  • ANTICIPATION - prepare the viewer for what's about to happen
  • ANTICIPATION - making the object's action more realistic
  • STAGING - focus on what's important within the scene and keep the motion of everything else of non-importance to a minimum
  • STRAIGHT-AHEAD ACTION - drawing frame-by-frame from start to finish
  • POSE-TO-POSE - draw beginning frame, end frame, and key frames in between, then complete the rest
  • FOLLOW THROUGH & OVERLAPPING ACTION - moving object such as a person comes to a stop, parts might continue to move in the same direction because of the force of forward momentum
  • FOLLOW THROUGH & OVERLAPPING ACTION - secondary elements (hair, clothing, fat) are following-through on the primary element and overlapping its action
  • SLOW IN, SLOW OUT - think about how a car starts moving slowly before gaining momentum and speeding up
  • ARCS - operate along a curved trajectory that adds the illusion of life to an animated object in action
  • ARCS - without arcs, your animation would be stiff and mechanical
  • SECONDARY ACTION - gestures that support the main action to add more dimension to character animation
  • SECONDARY ACTION - they can give more personality and insight to what the character is doing / thinking
  • TIMING - where on a timeline you put each frame of action
  • TIMING - using correct timing allows you to control the mood and the reaction of your characts and objects
  • EXAGGERATION - presents a charac's features & actions in extreme form for comedic / dramatic effect
  • EXAGGERATION - distortions in face feats, body types, expressions, charac's moves
  • SOLID DRAWING - make sure the animated forms feel like they're 3-dimensional
  • APPEAL - ppl remember real, interesting, and engaging characters
  • APPEAL - characs should be pleasing to look at & charisma, even the antagonists
