functions of blood

Cards (5)

  • Transportation: As mentioned earlier, blood transports oxygen from your lungs to all the cells in your body. It also carries nutrients from the food you eat to your cells, providing them with the energy they need to function. Additionally, blood picks up waste products and takes them to the organs that get rid of them, like the kidneys.
  • Protection: The WBC superheroes play a critical role in protecting your body from infections and diseases. They patrol your body and fight off harmful bacteria, viruses, and other invaders to keep you healthy.
  • Healing: When you get a cut or a scrape, blood helps in the healing process. The platelets form clots to stop bleeding, and then your body starts repairing the damaged tissues.
  • Regulation: Blood helps maintain a stable environment in your body. It regulates body temperature by carrying heat to different parts of your body. Blood also helps in maintaining the right balance of water and salts, ensuring that your body's internal conditions stay just right for everything to work properly.
  • Pituitary Gland - located at base of brain, secretes growth hormone (stimulates bone growth), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which stimulates production of T3 & T4 from thyroid gland, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) which stimulates release of cortisol from adrenal cortex, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) which stimulates sperm production in males and egg development in females, luteinizing hormone (LH) which stimulates ovulation in females and testosterone production in males, prolactin which stimulates milk production in females.
