  • Fewer visitors to Croagh Patrick have a negative economic impact on employment in the Westport region. Tour guides, hotel staff, and bus drivers will all have less work if tourist numbers fall. Some of these individuals may become unemployed and must seek jobs in other sectors of the economy outside tourism.

    How it can be used by tourists: This is used for hiking and hillwalking. People who visit the area can safely take a walking tour and take in the scenery and the natural beauty around Mount Eagle and the coastline.     How it can be used by tourists: Firstly, if tourists are driving to the areas
    they have the parking facilities close to the walkway and the attractions.
    There are also a number of picnic sites for tourists to use as a meeting
    point or an area for rest and dining after visiting the sites in the area.

    (ii) I have studied ecotourism in Costa Rica. Ecotourism has brought millions of people into the region. These tourists have trampled on plant life as they walk through the rainforest, destroying some of it. Some wild animals have had to move elsewhere to escape the noise and disruption made by some tourists.
  • (iv) Tourist activities like swimming and snorkelling cause damage to coral reefs. Corals are very delicate organisms and need clean water to survive. If there are lots of boats and swimmers near the reefs then the water gets dirty and this kills off the coral. Many marine creatures depend on coral reefs for food and shelter. When the coral dies, their habitat disappears and they die out.
  • (v) Some tourists buy souvenirs made from endangered animal skins or shells. For example, turtle shells are sometimes sold as decorations. This means that fewer turtles are born and the species declines. Also, some tourists pay large sums of money to hunt rare animals. This reduces the size of the populations of those animals.
  • Many tourists enjoy eating exotic foods while they are abroad. Sometimes these foods come from endangered species. For example, pangolins are eaten in China and Vietnam. Pangolin scales are also used in traditional medicine. As a result, pangolins are becoming extinct.
