Cards (13)

  • Partial – incomplete, limited
  • Plenary – complete, absolute
  • Indulgencies are the remission of all (plenary) or part (partial) of the temporal punishment due to sins which have already been given. They are granted in view of the merits of Christ the Redeemer and the prayers and good works of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints (CFC 1865).
  • Sin
    Has two effects
  • When sin is grave/mortal
It destroys our communion with God, thus, depriving us of eternal life (eternal punishment)
  • All sins
Weaken and wound our union with God and our relations with others and the community (temporal punishment)
  • Both eternal and temporal punishments are not imposed by God, but rather flow from the reality of sin
  • Eternal punishment
Is remitted when the guilt of our sins is forgiven, and we are restored to communion with God
  • The temporal consequences of sin remain even after eternal punishment is remitted
  • Working against the temporal effects of sin
    1. Patient suffering
    2. Toil
    3. Prayer
    4. Acceptance of death as term of our earthly human condition
  • Putting aside the "old self"
    Corrupted through deceitful desires
  • Putting on the "new man"
Created in God's image, whose justice and holiness are we born of truth
  • Ephesians 4:22-24: 'Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.'
