    • Offered to be the Archbishop of York if he supported the annulment
    • He went into exile in 1532 in Italy as he didn't support the annulment but knew he wouldn't be safe in England
    • 1536 he wrote policies against Henry the 8
    • Pope Paul the third put him in charge of helping provide assistant to the Pilgrimage of Grace
  • Marquess of exeter

    • Benefited from the dissolution of monasteries
    • Wide supported Elizabeth Barton and Catherine of Aragon
    • 1538: Henry Lord Montague countess of salisbury and Courtney arrested on charges of treason
    • Writing to cardinal Pole led to the Exeter conspiracy
    • Courtney was beheaded with a sword on Tower Hill on 9th of December 1538 with Henry Lord Montague

    • 27th of May 1541 he was executed
