  • Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
Dual-task lab experiment where participants were to perform two tasks at the same time.
Participants were to read prose and understand it while simultaneously remembering sequences of numbers. Reaction time given was increased as questions became more difficult. They then had to do an articulatory suppression task where they repeated "the" or numbers (random or 1-6) while they answered a question.
  • Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
Results - There wasn't a significant difference in reaction time between the group asked to repeat words or numbers 1-6 , but those who had to repeat random numbers had the worst performance. Baddeley and Hitch interpreted this as overload on the central executive.
  • Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
The verbal task made use of the central executive and the digit span task used the phonological loop, which suggests that the STM or working memory is made up of separate units that process different types of information.
