Dual-tasklab experiment where participants were to perform two tasks at the same time.
Participants were to readprose and understand it while simultaneously remembering sequences of numbers.Reactiontime given was increased as questions became more difficult. They then had to do an articulatorysuppression task where they repeated "the" or numbers (random or 1-6) while they answered a question.
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
Results - There wasn't a significant difference in reactiontime between the group asked to repeat words or numbers 1-6 , but those who had to repeat random numbers had the worst performance. Baddeley and Hitch interpreted this as overload on the centralexecutive.
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
The verbal task made use of the centralexecutive and the digitspan task used the phonologicalloop, which suggests that the STM or workingmemory is made up of separate units that processdifferent types of information.
