  • Common Noun
    a noun to refer to a common object such as a pen, table, tree etc. DOES NOT have a capital letter

    a Noun referring to a concept / idea, for example Love, Justice, Madness ect
  • Proper noun
    a noun with a capital letter. A name eg Steven, Durham, The Premier League
  • active verb
    verb relating to a physical process eg Kick, jump
  • Stative verb
    A verb relating to a mental process eg Think, Understand
  • Auxiliary verb
    minor verb used to support the main verb in a sentence. Relates to tense eg “he IS running“
  • Modal verb
    Type of auxiliary verb referring to levels of possibility, probability, obligation, necessity. For example WILL, WONT, SHOULD, MUST. Can be epistemic and deontic

    changing an adjective morphologically in order to use it to denote its highest form, eg bigger, big, superlative is Biggest

    Changing an adjective morphologically in order to use it to compare, for example instead of Big, the comparative form is Bigger

    Using the word ‘THE‘ to determine the noun for example THE car instead of a car
  • Indefinite article

    using A or AN to determine the noun, A car rather than THE car
