    Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the elite favored another
    type of Chinese theater called Kunqu , characterized by
    its elegant music and language. However, everything
    changed when four seasoned drama troupes from
    Anhui province performed for the Emperor’s birthday.
  • The four troupes came to be known as “The Four Great
    Anhui Companies” and proceeded to dominate Peking
    Opera in the next century.
  • Peking Operas fall under two categories
    wen (civil theater) which focuses on love, marriage, &
    relationships, and wu (military theater), which focuses on war and is known for acrobatics.
  • peking opera - There are two groups or divisions of instruments:
    civil ( wenchang ) and
    military ( wuchang ). The civil division accompanies singing and includes instruments such as
    the pipa, yueqin, and jinghu . The military division, on the other hand, accompanies acting,
    dancing, and fighting that includes drums, wooden clappers, cymbals, and gongs.
