Farming

Cards (13)

  • The Physical landscape has influenced the development of primary economic activities, The area shown in the aerial photograph and os map appears to be flat land, which supports farming. With flat land farmers can use machinery easier for planting and harvesting crops. It looks like the use of Land is grassland this facilitates farmers as they feed their animals on this land and they make winter feed called silage.
  • Deforestation the removal of a large forest area reduces soil fertility. It’s mainly caused by human activity. When Forests are cleared, the soil loses nutrients as there is no longer a planet litter. As a result of this humus can’t be created as there’s a reduction in plant litter. The land is then exposed, heavy rainfall increases leaching, which washes away the remaining nutrients that were present. The land is then exposed to soil which degrades the sunlight, which degrades the soil make it unable to support crops.
  • Saudi Arabia - oil
  • OPEC - ogranistion of petroleum exporting countries
  • Renewable energy saves the need of importing oil.
    • Climate is a factor that influences farming. The climate in Dublin is cool temperate oceanic that means it’s mild. In winter temp is between 5 degrees and in summer it’s between 16°.
    • Soil- the soil in Dublin is brown in Sandy this is good for farming.
    • relief- the land in North Dublin is flat and low-lying the land in South Dublin is mountainous.
  • Issues facing farming
    • pollution if fertilisation is done incorrectly can be a threat to soil.
    • over fertilisation - The nutrients supplied by artificial fertilisers don’t last long. Natural fertilisers release nutrients more slowly for this reason farmers use artificial fertilisers because nutrients are available in the soil there is a risk of overfertilisation.
    • Proper care for the soil-farmers should use pesticides and herbicides and allocated times of the year and in correct amounts to reduce the chance of soil contamination.
    • crop rotation growing different crops on the same field two years in a row, this means that the soil is given a chance to regain its nutrients.
  • Farming is more productive in the east of Ireland as a climate is milder compared to the west. The west of Ireland experiences cold and wetter climate as its influence by the Atlantic Ocean. This makes it challenging for crops to be grown in the west.
  • The soil in the east is more fertile and it’s suitable for agricultural use. This soil in West is poor quality because of rainfall.Soils like gley and peat can be found in the West
  • Climate the average weather over a long period of time. Some crops striving hotter temperatures for example rice strives in Equatorial climates. Some crops strive in mild/cold temperatures. Potatoes strive at cooler temperatures, they strive in the climate cool temperate oceanic.
  • Soil the tin upper layer of the Earth‘s surface. The types of soil are influenced by a lot of things; climate and relief. When soil is fertile it influences the productivity of agriculture. Brown soil is found in areas that have a low amount of rainfall. This land is nutrient rich,

Soils like grey and peat are not nutrient rich and are found in areas with cold/wet climates. Gley is found on mountainous areas.
