Cards (2)

  • How was a nations ability to wage total war similar between ACW and WW1 in regards to production?

In WW1 Rommel in North Africa needed 10,000 tons of petrol to continue his fight against Britain but received 600. This led to German defeat at the Second Battle of El Alamein and the start of the end of the Afrika Korps, allowing Allies to mount an Italian offensive. Similarly the Norths victory was because they had 6x the factories of the South and produced 97% of firearms in 1860. The North's ability to wage total war with their scorched earth policies was a big reason for victory in 1865.
  • Synthesis of total war's impact on nature in terms of involvement of civilians increasing?
Beginning- scorched earth tactics & foraging had little impact. Middle- North proposed to occupy land, destroy property and control the economy through naval blockade. Strategy 1862 onwards targeted civilians to wear down the South. Also scale of carnage with General Sherman's aim to destroy Sothern territory and property in March to the Sea increased the impact compared to FRW. End- Blitz 40000, Dresden 25000 in 48hrs, Tokyo 80-100,000 1 night 1945, atomic bombs Hiroshima 140000 & Nagasaki 75000
