  • One strength of NSI is that there is research support. When interviewed, ppts conformed bc they were self-conscious about giving correct answers but weren't afraid of disapproval. Writing answers down meant that conformity fell to 12.5%. Private answers meant that there is no normative group pressure
  • One strength of ISI is that there is research support. A researcher found that ppts conformed more to incorrect maths problems that were difficult. This is because ppts knew answers to easy maths problems and were ambiguous to hard problems. Ppts relied on others as they didn't want to be incorrect.
  • One limitation of NSI is that there are individual differences. nAffiliators are more concerned with being liked. Researcher found that nAffiliators were more likely to conform. Shows NSI underlies conformity for some. Individual differences in conformity not explained by situational pressures
