What is fertilisation?
The fusion of two haploid gametes to form a diploid
zygote.
What is an allele?
An allele is a different
form
of the same gene. E.g, brown + blue eye colours.
What is locus?
The
position
of a gene on a chromosome.
What is said about two alleles that are the same?
They are said to be
homozygous.
What is said about two alleles that are different?
They are
heterzygous.
Why is homozygous referred to as pure breeding?
There is no
variation
in the offspring.
What is the genotype?
The genotype refers to the
genetic
make
up
of an organism.
What is the phenotype?
The phenotype refers to the
physical
appearance of the organism.
What is a dominant allele?
A dominant allele is an allele that
masks
the
effect
of the recessive allele.
What is a recessive allele?
A recessive allele is an allele that is prevented from
working
by the dominant allele.
What is a monohybrid cross?
A monohybrid cross is a genetic cross between 2 organisms, where one gene is
studied.
