therapeutic - moral issues - religious

  • Therapeutic involves the use of stem cells to repair damaged or diseased tissues by creating identical human tissue. This is done by an egg cell having its nucleus removed and replaced with a nucleus from the patient’s cell. The cell is then stimulated to divide and develops into an embryo. After a few days the stem cells are removed and cultured for therapeutic use.
  • involves the destruction of an embryo - Christians think its wrong because they think embryo becomes human at fertilisation - this means they encourage use of stem cells and not embryos - weakness is no one of that belief can experience the benefits because it involves the embryo destruction
  • how the embryos are provided - not left from IVF must be surgically removed (explain) - this means embryos are created with no intention of becoming human a means to an end - roman Catholics think it is wrong because they think embryos are human - humans should only be made through the conjugal act with the intention to make a child - this means that making embryos for any other reason and people will have to do without the products - strong view because the surgery puts health at risk
  • using embryos is playing God and intentionally tempering with the plan he has - christians agree as its interfering and going against his orders not to question him - this means its bad because its intentionally disobeying him - a consequence is that procreation is taken out of Gods hands and given to man - therefore gods plan isnt being fulfilled because life should be up to him - i disagree because embryos are filling a purpose God should be as an omnipotent being
  • sanctity of life is disregarded because embryos can be seen as humans - if embryos can be destroyed humans can be too - orthodox jews think sanctity of life is important because god chose to give us a life and it should be preserved as long as possible as it was a gift - equality of all humans - this means that since embryos as humans they must be treated with respect - a result of this is that they're protected since theyre conceived and wont be taken advantage of - beneficial as it shows compassion and kindness to all
  • when does life begin? - when a baby takes it first breath "he breathed life giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to life" - this means that it's okay to demolish embryos because it isnt living - roman catholic disagree, destroying embryos is murder and goes against "do not kill" - this means its bad because its sinning which can weaken their relationship with God - jews embryos outside of the womens body wont grow into human - this means they can be used as they dont have moral status - i agree with jews as embryos would go to waste which is worse
  • therapeutic cloning - lead to reproductive cloning - new technology means no way of knowing how it'll turn out - a consequence is it brings about several ethical concerns like loss of life, loss of identity and other problems - roman catholics think its wrong because we dont know enough - a consequence is if thery're not used at all theres no danger of mutations if it goes wrong - i think this is strong because we dont know enough about long term consequence to deem safe
