  Lots of small stores and corner shops; no modern shopping centres

  Over half of the docklands derelict, many empty factories/warehouses and unused docks

  Mainly high density terraced houses up to 100 years old, houses were small and lacked amenities but there was a strong 'East End community spirit'

  Narrow congested roads, many heavy lorries, a parking problem

  Decline in industries resulted in loss of jobs and high unemployment

  Virtually no open space, almost all land developed, no leisure activities
