    • Housing was very basic - often slaves had to build their own shelters
    • Slave houses were small rectangular hut with thatched roofs
    • Large families would be forced to live in this small space
    • The houses were often run down and not suitable
    • Many slept on boards, which covered the dirt floor, but some managed to make hammocks for themselves to sleep in
    • Slaves would also have their own garden patch, where they would grow food
    • This would be their main source of food, however there simply wasn't enough grown
