  • Prison
People who commit crime deserve punishment and a loss of freedom. The prison population has risen by 70% in the last 30 years, the majority had non-violent offences (65%). The prison system is overcrowded and the death rate in prisons has risen by over 50%. 9,931 people serving a sentence of less than a year were recalled to prison in the year of June 2020.
  • CCTV
CCTV is usually the first request in police enquires, it allows you to identify a potential suspect or victim. Without CCTV identification of a suspect it can be very difficult, it also deters crime as people fear of being caught. It can make a small but statistically significant reduction in crime - it is most effective when directed at reducing theft and/or from vehicles. It is least effective when it comes to violent crimes. Many cases have been solved due to CCTV, for example to James Bulger case.
  • Restorative justice
This is a voluntary process where the victim speaks with a person who has caused them harm. A trained facilitator organises sessions and helps victims/criminals understand the impact the crime has had on themselves and others. It also helps them to take responsibility. This method is growing in popularity, for example Black Lives Matter.
