use the benedict's solution to test for sugars- if the food sample contains a reducing sugar the solution will change from blue to green yellow or red
there are two types of sugers- non reducing and reducing
use iodine solution to test for starch- solution will change from browny orange to black or blue black
use the biuret test to test for proteins- will change from blue to purple
use the sudan iii test to test for lipids - if the sample contains lipids the mixture will separate out into two layers the top layer will be bright red
