Marriage

Cards (6)

  • A Jewish wedding usually takes place under a chuppah, a canopy held up by four poles and this symbolises the home they will build together
  • The bride may circle the groom three to seven times and this symbolises protection
  • In the Orthodox tradition, the groom has responsibility towards his wife
  • A glass is broken beneath the groom's foot and this reminds those present of the destruction of the Temple
  • The bride and groom have a short time together in a private room. For orthodox Jews, before they get married they won't touch each other until they get married
  • They can't get married on a Saturday because there is Shabbat and it is the Jewish day of rest
