The UUP was the largest unionist party. It consisted of moderate unionists. Its main aim was to defend N.I. as part of the U.K. Its leader was Brain Faulkner.
Alliance was formed in April 1970. They had unionist ideals but accepted Unionists and Nationalists. They received their support mainly from working class Catholics and Protestants. They wanted to achieve O'Neill's policies and reforms. Their leader was Oliver Napier.
The DUP was formed in September 1971. It was a hardline unionist party and wanted to provide a strong defence to maintain the union with Britain. Their leader was Ian Paisley.
The SDLP was formed in September 1970 and was supported by most Catholics. They wanted the eventual reunification of Ireland, but first wanted civil rights. Their leader was Gerry Fitt
