Structure

• Blake uses repetition of the words ‘charter’d’ and ‘every’ to reinforce the pervasive control and suffering
• The poem has 4 lines per stanza and 4 stanzas which is very controlled, this reflects the extreme control in Industrial London
• The poem being autobiographical creates as immediate and personal account of London’s harsh reality
• The poem has a strict ‘ABAB’ rhyme scheme which is consistent through the whole poem, just like the consistency of the suffering throughout London, it is also very controlled which reflects the controlled nature of Industrial London.
