Sequencing and scheduling

Cards (3)

  • Overall
Assist with structuring and ordering the transformation process
Sequencing - refers to the order in which activities in the operations process occur
Scheduling - refers to the length of time activities take within the operations process
  • Gantt Charts

Outlines the activities needed to be performed, the order in which they should occur and how long each activity is expected to take
Used for any process that has several steps and involves a number of different activities that need to be performed
Advantages: it forces a manager to plan the steps needed to complete a task and to specify the time required and they make it easy to monitor actual progress against planned activities
    Disadvantages: not detailed
  • Critical Path Analysis

Shows what tasks need to be done, how long each takes and the order necessary to complete the tasks
Shortest length of time it takes to complete the process or project
Some tasks can be performed simultaneously
As each activity on the schedule must be completed to make the final product, the critical path ensures all tasks have been completed.
Advantages: manager to identify priorities. Will allow them to identify which tasks are able to be performed simultaneously giving direction and organisation to the operations process, providing overall means of control.
