ENGEO 3

Cards (13)

  • Geology
The scientific study of the Earth, its materials, processes, and structures
  • Geology
    • Explores the composition, history, and physical properties of the Earth's solid materials, such as rocks, minerals, and soils
    • Explores the processes that shape the Earth over time, including plate tectonics, erosion, volcanic activity, and sedimentation
  • Geological Investigation
Studying the Earth's makeup and movements to see how they affect building projects
  • Geological Investigation
    1. Look at rocks, soil, and how the ground moves
    2. See if there are any problems we need to watch out for when building
    3. Understanding how the Earth changes over time
  • Geological investigation is like figuring out how the Earth works to build things safely
  • Surface investigation - this method involves studying the geological features and materials present on the Earth's surface
  • Subsurface investigation - this method involves studying the geological features and materials beneath the Earth's surface.
  • Direct Subsurface Investigation - direct methods involve physical exploration through drilling, excavation, and borehole logging. Core samples and geophysical measurements provide direct information.
  • Indirect Subsurface Investigation - indirect methods rely on geophysical surveys and remote sensing techniques. Seismic surveys, electrical resistivity imaging, and ground penetrating radar are used to infer subsurface characteristics without physical intervention.
  • Reconnaissance - preliminary investigation using published information and other existing data. A detailed geological survey of the site, possibly with a photogeology study.
  • Preliminary Site Exploration - Applied geophysical surveys to provide information about the subsurface geology.
  • In-depth Investigation - boring, drilling, and excavation are done to provide confirmation of the previous result and quantitative detail at critical points on the site.
  • Laboratory Testing - at this stage, the soil recovered during the in-depth soil investigation is tested in the lab.
    The basic tests are:
    1. Classification Test
    2. Shear Strength Test
