Transfer

Cards (6)

  • Positive transfer is where one skill helps in learning the performance of another. E.g overarm throwing a ball to a javelin throw.
  • Negative transfer is where one skill hinders the learning of another. E.g a badminton forehand shot to a tennis shot (different wrist action).
  • Proactive transfer is where a previously learnt skill affects a skill being currently learnt (positive or negative). E.g throwing a ball in the air will help an overarm volley ball serve.
  • Retroactive transfer is when the learning of a new skill affects a previously learned skill (positive or negative). E.g successful tennis serve may influence a previously learned overarm throw used in cricket.
  • Bilateral transfer is a transfer of a skill from one side of the body to the other. E.g shooting right and left footed in football.
  • Optimise positive transfer by highlighting transferable elements and elements that may hinder learning, overlearn the skill, progressively build on skills from existing subroutines and make sure performer is motivated and confident.
