Cards (7)

  • gender equality
giving people the same rights and opportunities regardless of whether they're male/female.
  • Gender prejudice
unfairly judging someone before the facts are known; holding biased
opinions about an individual or group based on their gender e.g., believing women are more naturally caring/the weaker sex.
  • Sexual seterotyping
Having a fixed general idea/ image of how men and women will behave.
  • 2 arguments in favour of men and women being equal
Many Christians believe that all people have been created as equals in God's image. The command to love one's neighbour means that discrimination is wrong; indeed, Jesus treated
women with respect, welcomed them as disciples and showed in the story of Mary and Martha that they were capable of things other than domestic tasks.
Most Christians today see marriage as an equal partnership where the different gifts of each person (male and female), strengthen family life. Men and women are of equal value in God's eyes.
  • 2 arguments against men and women being equal
Some traditional Christians believe that men are the head of the family and that women should mainly stay at home and care for the children. This may stem from a literal interpretation of Biblical texts that reflect the position of women at the time they were written.
Only women can be mothers and only men fathers - these roles can't be interchanged. The sort of egalitarianism that ignores the specific character of a man or a woman contradicts God's plan of creation.
  • Quote on men and women being equal
The Bible says Eve was a "helper" for Adam. Some Christians believe this means the woman's role is to be subservient to men.
  • Quote of men being better than woman
The Bible says, "at the head of every woman is a man." Some Christians believe that men are superior to women and are in charge.
