filtration and crystalisation

Cards (9)

  • physical separation techniques can only be used to separate mixtures
  • define filtration?
used to separate an insoluble solid from a liquid
  • what does insoluble mean?
solid will not dissolve in the liquid
  • how does filtration work?
    1. pour the mixture into the filter paper
    2. the liquid passes through the tiny pores in the filter paper
    3. solid material cant pass through the filter paper so it's trapped
  • what is crystallisation?
separates a soluble solid from a liquid
  • what is soluble?
    solid can be dissolved
  • leaving the soluble solution for a few days, it will evaporate forming crystals and will turn from an aqueous (water) solution to a solid
  • how to make crystallisation more faster?
by heating the solution to evaporate the water - be careful= certain chemicals will break down with heat so its sometimes better to let water evaporate on its own
  • how does crystalisation work?
    1. a solution is placed in a evaporating basin and is heated using a bunsen burner
    2. the water evaporates leaving solid crystals behind
