  • what are the 2 types of distillation?
    Simple and fractional distillation
  • what is simple distillation?
separating a dissolved solid from a liquid whilst keeping the liquid
  • steps of simple distillation?
    1. evaporate the liquid by heating - turns it into vapour
    2. condense the vapour back into liquid by cooling
  • what is the purpose of the flask?-SD
to put our liquid and dissolved solid in
  • how does the condenser work?- SD
H20 out of the condenser and the cold H20 into the condenser. cold H20 from the tap continuously runs through the condenser = keeps the glass tube cold
  • what is the thermometer's purpose in SD?
    Measure temperature
  • how does simple distillation work?
    1. heat the solution with a bunsen burner
    2. as the solution is heated the liquid starts to condense into a vapour
    3. vapour rises up the glass tube
    4. as vapour passes over the thermometer, the reading increases
    5. heat solution until it boils
    6. vapour passes into the condenser - cold water in condenser causes the vapour to condense turning back to a liquid
    7. collect liquid in the beaker
    8. in the flask there solid crystals left behind
  • what is a negative about simple distillation?
great amount of energy is needed
  • what can simple distillation be used for?
    drinking water
  • what is fractional distillation?

these liquids must have different boiling points
