    Some performers do not show positive sporting behaviour and tend to bend the rules.
  • Reasons for good sporting etiquette:
    • Fair and protects the reputation of the sport
    • Promotes positive sports value: respect, fair play
    • Demonstrates a positive role model to inspire others.
  • Examples of good sporting etiquette:
    • Shake opposition hand: win or lose
    • In rugby, players and crowd is silent during a kick
    • Applauding a new cricketer to the field.
  • Sportsmanship examples:
    • Admitting that the ball touched your bat in cricket
    • Shaking hands at the beginning and end of a match
    • Kicking the ball out of play in football when a player is injured
  • Gamesmanship examples:
    • Time wasting by dribbling the ball into the corner of the pitch in football
    • Faking a foul or injury
    • Going for excessive toilet breaks in tennis to put opponent off
  • Why good spectator etiquette is important:
    • Shows respect to the players
    • Allows the game to flow
    • Can negatively affect team performance on the pitch
  • Examples of good spectator etiquette:
    • Be respectful to opposition fans
    • They should not chant anything that could be offensive
    • Enter and leave the venue safely
  • Examples of poor spectator etiquette:
    • Invading the pitch
    • Not respecting and being quiet at appropriate times
    • Harassing the opposition fans
