The digestive system

Cards (11)

  • An enzyme is a biological catalyst - a protein that can speed up or control a specific reaction
  • Digestive enzymes convert larger food molecules into smaller soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood stream .
  • Carbohydrate enzymes:
    • carbohydrates -> simple sugars
    • Amylase is produced by the salivary glands , pancreas and small intestine
    • It breaks down starch in the mouth and small intestine
  • Protease enzymes:
    • proteins -> amino acids
    • Produced by the stomach , pancreas and small intestine.
    • Break down of proteins occurs in the stomach and small intestine.
  • Lipase enzymes:
    • lipids -> fatty acids + glycerol
    • Produced by the pancreas and small intestine
    • Break down of lipids ( fats and oils ) occurs in the small intestine
  • Salivary gland produces digestive enzymes
  • Liver produces bile
  • Some digestive happens in the stomach
  • Pancreas produces digestive enzymes
  • In the large intestine water is absorbed and faeces is formed
  • In the small intestine digestion is completed and soluble substances are absorbed
