• had too much to drink and falls off the roof
• his soul goes to Hades and his body is left unburied
• incident is brief but character is memorable - stark contrast to Ody
• Elenor is the youngest of the crew, not much of a fighter, and not very smart
• dies a death so unheroic that nobody seems to have noticed - no kleos
• Elpenor is left behind yet reaches Hades before Ody
• prompts Ody to shout that he is faster on foot that on his ship
• further irony that Elpenor requests for his oar to be planted on his burial mound - reference to Tiresias' prophecy
• seems unlikely that Ody would leave a body unburied or that Circe would have ignored it - discrepancy
