• non communicable diseases are diseases that are not infectious cannot be passed from one organism to another, they are not caused by pathogens - a microorganism hazardous to health
• a risk factor is a variable associated with an increased chance of disease or infection
• correlations are not the same as causal mechanisms
• correlation is a link or relationship between two factors
• a causal mechanism is how one of the factors actually influence each other - there is a biological or other explanation that truly links the two
• the presence of a correlation does not prove a causal mechanism because data can be manipulated and the two things measured are not always related other than how much they increase or decrease
• impacts of non communicable diseases include financial cost to individual, community or country and a negative impact on family and friends
• deficiencies can cause anaemias
• over exposure to sun can cause skin cancer
• lack of food can cause malnutrition
• stress can cause heart attacks
• obesity can cause coronary heart disease
• malnourishment can cause immune system issues
• poor hygiene can cause viruses
• vaping/smoking can cause lung disease and cancer
