Fertilisation

Cards (8)

  • Fertilisation
The fusion of a male gamete with a female gamete to form a zygote (fertilised egg cell)
  • Male gametes
    • Found on the anthers - in the pollen grains
  • Female gametes
    • Found in the ovary which are the ovules
  • Steps of forming the zygote
    1. Pollen must first travel from an anther to the stigma in a process called pollination
    2. When a pollen grain lands on the stigma, it forms a pollen tube down the style of the flower
    3. The pollen grain's nucleus travels down the pollen tube as it grows towards the ovary and the ovule
    4. The pollen tube reaches a tiny opening in the ovule, and then the tip of the pollen tube dissolves allowing the pollen nucleus to enter the ovule
    5. The pollen nucleus fuses with the egg cell nucleus
    6. This fusion of the two nuclei is fertilisation
    7. The single zygote cell divides and develops to become a plant embryo which has a plumule and a radicle
  • Plumule
    • To become the first shoot
  • Radicle
    • To become first root
  • Cotyledon
    • Food store
  • Seed Coat
    • Protective layer
