guilt

Cards (4)

  • "to bed, to bed, to bed." - lady macbeth
repetition shows she needs to be in bed as she is a victim of treason and cannot deal with the guilt. If someone commits regicide, they go crazy (divine right of kings).
  • "All the perfumes of Arabia would not sweeten this hand." - lady macbeth
(metaphor) not even the best smells can take her guilt away. (hyperbole) the smell of guilt is so strong that nothing can replace it.
  • "Out damned spot! Out I say!" - lady macbeth

she is hallucinating which shows her guilt as she has been made unstable by the crimes that she has comitted. Repetition of "out" emphasises her madness resulting from this guilt.
  • "sleep no more" - macbeth

guilt after killing Duncan causes Macbeth to lose sleep as his mind is riddled with remorse. Shakespear warns the audience about comitting regicide as it goes against the divine right of kings and makes you unstable.
