The river flows over hard and
soft
rock. When river gets to the
soft
rock it will erode through the process, differential erosion.
Next the water goes off the
edge
and creates a
plunge pool.
This is formed by
hydraulic
action and abrasion.
The turbulence of the water
undercuts
the
softer
rock so it creates a
cave
behind the waterfall.
Overtime, this keeps happening and retreats
upstream.
This then forms
a
gorge, which is a long
narrow
channel where a waterfall has eroded.
Differential erosion - used to describe erosion that is occurring at
different
rates, this is often caused by either
geology
or available
energy
