  • "Guzzling and gulping in the best hotel" - Monstrous image - Upper class are ugly inside and out. Overindulgence here is potrayed as disgusting
  • "Poor young chap" - shallow comment
  • "I used to know his father well" upper class always looking to outlet their privileged position
  • "Last scrap" all that war is to them is "scrap" like scrap metal or dirt. Soldiers represent just a small insignificant resource for their master goal to win the war (Their only concern)
  • "Youth stone dead" horrific juxtaposition - sanctity of life removed. Cost of human life is on the floor.
  • "toddle safely home" - baby walk/fat walk. Overindulgence and naiviety both demonstrated simultaneously.
  • '-in bed' hypen adds to the emphasis on this gross privilege. No nightmares/no concerns. An image of pure comfortability
