Used in Northern Ireland. Candidates are ranked by order of preference, if a candidate receives over 50% they win, if not lowest candidate is knocked out and votes are redistributed. Uses droop quota
Advantages
+ Produces proportional outcome, 2017: DUP got 28% of the vote and 31% of the seats
+ Gives voters wider choice of candidates, 2022: 239 candidates
+ Helps smaller parties and idnepents be elected, 2017: 1.8% of seats won by independents (compared to 17 seats for Westminster)
Disadvantages
- More complicated, ballot was filled incorrectly in Scotland
- Vote counting can take awhile, often between 1-2 days
- Helps extremists be elected, Britannica Party put forward 4 candidates
